Access to SQL Server Conversion ]
DataRevive
offers a unique and highly specialised service worldwide for its customers,
converting existing Access based database systems to SQL Server 2000
databases, in conjunction where necessary with complete front end rebuilds

to a SQL Server backend).
Our extensive
experience with the Access database file format, and our intricate knowledge
of all aspects of Microsoft Access database development ensures cost
effective (pain free) conversions.
If you
are considering upsizing your Access Jet engine based database (MDB)
to SQL Server and retaining your existing Access Front End Forms, Reports
etc then ... we can help!
[
Is the Access Jet Engine Dead? ]
Some background
briefly ... Microsoft released the last version of the Jet Engine Database
(the underlying database engine that Access is based on) with Office
2000 SR1, and Office 2002 (XP) retains this 'dead' engine. The strategic
direction for Microsoft was to abandon the Jet engine (MDB database)
in favor of SQL Server in the year 2000.
However,
many companies small and large continue to forge ahead with complicated
multi-user Access databases often to their detriment (in terms of increased
risks of database corruption, poor performance and lack of any data
security).
Due to
the above reasons, we recommend to all clients with mission critical
database systems written with Microsoft Access and using the Jet database
(i.e. a database with MDB extension) be upsized/converted to SQL Server
and where necessary a new front end developed in Microsoft Access.
[
Why convert Access to SQL Server? ]
The business
reasons for a converting an existing Access database to SQL Server (but
retaining Access as the front end) are as follows:
- Increased
Performance (SQL Server is a proper RDBMS not a file
based system like Jet). Calls to the database server result in the
requested records being sent across the network, not the entire file
in the case of the Jet database. SQL Server is designed for multiple
users in a network environment, whereas Access Jet Database was never
designed for multiple users.
- Increased
Robustness. There is a virtual cottage industry based
around repairing corrupt acccess databases! (DataRevive operates the
leading Access database repair service). Try searching for data recovery
companies repairing SQL Server databases... there is no market for
such a service! (need we say anymore).
- Improved
Management and Backup due to SQL Server offering
a true database server environment it has integrated backup, maintenance
and management features that access lacks. Access Jet engine is just
a file, it is not an intelligent database system like SQL Server.
- Unlimited
scalability from 1 to unlimited users for SQL Server, but
limited severely in Access depending on other factors (in most cases,
exceeding 10 concurrent users in a multi user Access database is asking
for trouble). To increase the performance of the SQL server, you can
easily add ram, a new processor etc.

Cheaper Alternatives ? ]
You may
find that a better solution to converting your Access Databases to SQL
Server is simply to manage your existing databases better.
We have
found a product which does all of this, and it runs on your Server as
a Windows Service. Its called Access Autopilot and it means just that.
Access
Autopilot performs automated backup, archive and compact operations
overnight (or whenever your users are out of the application). This
means that your database will run faster, with less chance of corruption.
You can
setup Access Autopilot to actually run an Access macro in the database
that then purges out old data. This way, you can implement an archiving
strategy for all your databases - again, improving performance.
At the
very least, the sophisticated backup options for Access databases (including
ability to extract out table data while users are in the database) will
save you from ever need DataRevive for data recovery purposes!
Its easy
to setup and configure, and comes with a 30 Day Trial version. Trust
me, this is an indispensable tool!
